Top Cars for Towing Caravans

Prepare for a much-needed getaway by choosing a car best-suited to towing a caravan

With summer holidays looming, you may be gearing up for a family holiday - there are certainly lots of beautiful places to choose from around us here in East Anglia. If your plans include caravanning, you may be looking for a car upgrade that’s up to the towing challenge. But what should you choose? Here, we'll explore what to look for in a towing car, and what cars are the best for towing...

What should you look for in a towing car?

When you’re looking for a car to tow your caravan with, it makes sense to look for something solid, heavy and stable - this is not a job for a small city car.

The kerb weight of your car, which is its partially laden weight, should ideally exceed, or at least be equal to, the fully laden weight of your caravan, so you’re looking for a good match in this department.

Many caravan owners choose 4x4s or cars with all-wheel drive functionality and for a good reason; these vehicles are best suited to pulling heavy loads in all weather conditions.

What are the top cars for towing caravans?

Kia Sorento

The Sorento is Kia’s answer to a rugged SUV with all-wheel drive, and we’re not exaggerating when we tell you that it is a perfect car for towing. The diesel model has a 2,500kg towing capacity, and 1,650kg on the hybrid models, enabling it to pull full-size caravans with ease, maintaining its stability, even on tricky country roads.

Inside, the Sorento’s suitability for holidays continues, with plenty of storage for all your travel items, plus a 1,996-litre capacity in the self-charging hybrid version and a 2,011-litre capacity in the 2.2L diesel. That’s a lot of room for luggage!

Ford Ranger

The epitome of a four-wheel drive vehicle that can take on anything, the Ford Ranger is super popular amongst caravan owners. It’s an off-roader, so it can easily handle the lumps and bumps of even the most rural campsite, widening your holiday horizons and making every journey an adventure.

As you’d expect, all models come with engines that are on the larger side, so there’s plenty of pulling power - yes, even on those steep hills.

Mazda C-X5

The C-X5 hit the market as a family SUV, and this reputation has only strengthened since its release. Now available with all-wheel drive, its stability is just one of the benefits it has to boast about, making it an ideal choice for those that enjoy spontaneous escapes in their caravan.

In addition to fantastic performance, it’s also a comfortable car too - vital for long family trips. No destination is too far when your car is as well equipped as the Mazda CX-5

MG HS

If affordability is up there with towing capability, and your caravan is on the smaller side, let us introduce you to the MG HS. MG has been making waves in the world of car manufacturing since they launched back onto the scene in 2011, and the MG HS is their SUV offering, with dynamic good looks and a braked trailer weight of 1,750kg.

Choose between the SE model, which gets you satellite navigation, rear parking camera with sensors, rain-sensing wipers, or the top-of-the-range Trophy model, which has all that plus leather upholstery, heated front seats and more.

Nissan Qashqai

Much loved for its appeal as an all-rounder, is there anything a Qashqai can’t do? Its practicality extends to towing caravans, thanks to its stability at speed, and the option it gives drivers to kick into 4-wheel drive mode.

On board, holiday-makers can enjoy phone connectivity via Android Auto/Apple CarPlay (Acenta Premium models), parking assistance and, exclusively on Tenka+ models, quilted premium leather seat fronts; who said caravanning meant sacrificing creature comforts?

Mitsubishi Outlander

Mitsubishi are pros at 4x4 manufacturing, and now the off-road capabilities of the Mitsubishi Outlander are paired with fuel-saving hybrid technology. A braked towing capacity of 1,500kg makes it ideal for towing a family caravan without it being a struggle to get going as you hit the motorway.

Heated leather seats make early starts all the easier, and sat nav on many models means you’ll always get to the campsite without getting lost on the way.
