What is MG Pilot and How Does It Work?

Find out more about the technologies developed by MG to improve your driving experience

If you feel like you’ve seen more MGs on the roads in recent years, you almost definitely have! Since its relaunch in 2011, MG has established itself once again as a manufacturer of fun (but still technically impressive) cars that offer great value to pretty much every motorist that buys one. MG is a brand that we’re so proud to represent here at EMG, with a showroom and workshop in Ipswich dedicated to the sales and service of their fantastic models.

With the competition high in the car-making industry, MG pulls out all the stops in terms of the latest technology, and that includes the safety considerations within their new models. For many motorists, advanced safety tech is high on the priority list when it comes to buying their next car, which is where MG Pilot comes in. Here, we’ll explain what MG Pilot is, and what you can expect from it…

What is MG Pilot?

Described by MG as a ‘suite of clever assistance technologies’, MG Pilot is your in-built right-hand person, there to make driving as safe and plain sailing as possible in models such as the MG EV4. Aptly named, it is essentially a co-pilot, using MGs innovation to do things like detect hazards, monitor lane position, and even brake on your behalf in the event of an impending collision.

What does MG Pilot do?

When you’re out and about in an MG, it’s good to know that MG Pilot can work with you to keep your journeys safe - here’s how it does it:

Active Emergency Braking with Pedestrian and Bicycle Detection

A collision can occur within seconds (or less), and as a human, our reactions can’t compete; Active Emergency Braking, (AEB), however, has the potential to prevent some collisions by sensing they’re about to happen - the beauty of technology! At speeds above 20km/h (12.4mph), automatic braking will reduce the severity of any accident, whilst below 20km/h it works to avoid the collision altogether.

Adaptive Cruise Control

Long journeys are no longer a slog thanks to ACC; as an upgrade from the cruise control of old, ACC used radar sensors to react to traffic conditions and ‘adapt’ to them, adjusting your speed to maintain a predetermined distance from the car in front.

Lane Departure Warning and Lane Keep Assist

Drifting across lanes can obviously cause great risk to yourself and other drivers. Lane Departure Warnings keep you on the straight and narrow by sensing the lines in the road and alerting you if the car deviates without you indicating; Lane Keep Assist physically adjusts the driving position to keep you within those lines too.

Intelligent High Beam Control

Keeping on top of your high beams at night can distract you, as you’ll need to turn them off if another car comes towards you to prevent you from dazzling them, but Intelligent High Beam Control takes that off your plate. Intelligent High Beam Control detects oncoming traffic for you when in the ‘auto’ position, switching between high and dipped beams with ease.

Traffic Jam Assist

Traffic jams are an unfortunate fact of motoring life, but MG’s worked at making things a little less painful; by following the pattern of the car in front, your MG can accelerate and brake on your behalf!

Blind Spot Detection

Every driver has blind spots to contend with, and even if you think you know what’s coming up beside you, you should always check; manoeuvring when there’s someone in your blind spot is very dangerous indeed. Blind Spot Detection uses sensors to detect vehicles in the blind spots to the left and right of the cars, showing a visible signal to you, the driver, so you know not to move just yet.

Intelligent Speed Limit Assist

Actually compulsory for vehicles manufactured from July 2022, Intelligent Speed Limit Assist combats speeding (and therefore driving unsafely) by being able to read road signs using a camera, and alert the driver to adjust their speed accordingly.

Rear Cross Traffic Alert

If another car has ever approached from either side as you’ve reversed, you can guess the safety implications of you not knowing they’re there; RCTA will alert you if this happens, so you know when this potential hazard is occurring.

How are safety features tested on cars?

In order to test the safety of cars independently for consumers, Euro NCAP was set up in 1997 to rate cars using rigorous crash tests and a star rating system (5 being the highest) to let drivers know what they could expect from their next car in a safety sense.
