How do Electric cars work?

An electric car is just like any other car, except it uses a battery to drive a powerful electric motor. This makes them more economical and with no emissions, better for the environment. And instead of refuelling you simply recharge at home, or at one of the many public charge points.

Reasons to drive a Kia Electric car

There are substantial benefits to owning an electric car. Here are our top four:

Cheap to run

Because electricity is much cheaper than petrol or diesel, your journey could cost less than a third of what it would in a combustion-engine car. Battery-electric vehicles can also travel for free in the UKā€™s new Clean Air Zones and Londonā€™s Congestion Zone.

Zero emissions

An electric vehicle doesnā€™t have a tailpipe, which means no exhaust emissions. This helps improve air quality, particularly in urban areas.

Charge at home

Imagine waking up every day with a ā€˜full tankā€™. Just plug in when you get home, and your car takes care of the rest.

Relaxing drive

Electric cars are incredibly quiet, making for a more relaxing atmosphere. Driving is easy too, because electric motors produce maximum torque at all revs. That simply means you get maximum power without having to rev through the gears, so acceleration is instant.

How does an electric car work?

In simple terms, energy is stored in a large battery, which drives a powerful electric motor. To charge it, just plug it into a home charge point, or a public charger when youā€™re out and about, the car takes care of the rest.

Whatā€™s it like to drive an electric car?

A lot of fun actually - because electric cars are incredibly responsive. Unlike combustion engines, their electric motors produce maximum torque at any rpm. So, you can enjoy instant acceleration without worrying about gear changes.

Are electric cars efficient?

In a word, yes. EVs convert over 77% of the electrical energy from the grid to power at the wheels. Conventional gasoline vehicles only convert about 12% - 30% of the energy stored in gasoline to power at the wheels.

Do electric cars require a lot of maintenance?

Electric vehicles require considerably less maintenance than fuel-powered cars. Thatā€™s mostly due to the fact that their ā€œinner workingsā€ are a lot simpler. And lower maintenance means fewer servicing costs.
