5 Reasons To Have Your Car Regularly Serviced

Keeping your car maintained could mean many more years of happy motoring

When you become a car owner, you take on the responsibilities of driving and maintaining your vehicle in the safest manner possible, not only for you, but for those around you too. This obligation takes many forms, including driving with care, insuring and taxing your car, getting an MOT annually, and having it regularly serviced.

This last one isn’t a legal requirement, but it’s one of the most important parts of your car’s maintenance, as the trained technicians at our EMG’s East Anglia service centres can happily tell you!

There are several reasons why you should adhere to your vehicle’s recommended service schedule, and they go beyond the health and well-being of both you and your vehicle.

What is a car service?

A service on your car will be required annually, or at certain mileage intervals (10,000 miles, for example), whichever comes first. A trained technician will take this opportunity to check the condition of the vehicle, including engine oil and coolant levels, brakes, lights, suspension, battery health and exhaust.

Many manufacturers recommend different levels of servicing depending on the age or mileage of the car, as different things need attention at different stages of the vehicle’s life. For example, an interim service may be required at 10,000 miles, and a full service at 20,000.

Why should I get my car regularly serviced?

Reason 1: To keep you, your car and those around you safe

When your car isn’t properly maintained, it increases the risk of something going wrong on it that could endanger your life, and the lives of those around you on the roads. Brakes that have been left to fail, for example, could have catastrophic consequences out on the roads, so it’s well worth getting booked in at a service centre for your peace of mind.

Reason 2: To save money

Skipping the service on your car is a false economy; your regular car service is an opportunity for problems to be identified before they worsen and become expensive, inconvenient problems. The money you saved on the service could be seen doubling or trebling before you know it, and it all could have been avoided through a once-over with an experienced car technician.

Reason 3: To retain your car’s value

When you’re looking for a used car, the presence of full service history, particularly at garages that are trusted by the manufacturer, can seal a deal. The reassurance this gives prospective owners is that it’s a vehicle that has been properly maintained, and is less likely to cause them problems in the future. That’s peace of mind that they’re willing to pay for!

If nothing else, think of the increased value your car will hold when you come to sell it as motivation to get that stamp in the service book.

Reason 4: To reduce nasty surprises

What would you rather avoid, an unexpected breakdown, or a surprise repair bill? We’re betting it’s both. Regularly servicing your car gives you the best chance of keeping your car in good working order, reducing the likelihood that something within it will fail (and it will never happen at a convenient time), and/or an expensive repair bill.

Reason 5: Extend your car’s life and performance

When you rely on your car so much in all aspects of daily life, you want to know that you can trust it to carry on getting you from A to B as long as possible. Our cars are just like us; by looking after them properly, they can carry on covering the distances you need them to for longer.

As the cost of living soars, regular servicing is a good way to reduce your chances of having to spend out on a new car before you need to.
